Punching robots won't stop driverless cars

Since California became a haven for testing driverless cars this year there's been six accidents involving a human and an autonomous vehicle. Four of the accidents were minor scuffs with little to no damage reported. In two, however, the humans involved attacked the driverless vehicles on purpose. According to a Los Angeles Times article, California DMV reports indicate humans in both incidents ran into the street to attack the vehicles. It's unclear why a person would do such a thing, but to be fair it's unclear why people do a lot of things.

A team of researchers has developed a system for driverless cars that lets pedestrians signal the car to either stop or continue driving with a wave of the hand. The system uses an LED display and sensors to detect a pedestrian nearby. The system could have an impact on the safety of driverless cars in cities where many pedestrians share the road with drivers. Once the car is aware of a pedestrian's presence, the pedestrian can raise their hand as a stop sign, which makes the figure on the LED screen turn green, stopping the car. The system, called Blink, was created by researchers at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London.

Should I stay or should I go? An LED display for driverless cars aims to give pedestrians at a crossing the power to communicate with vehicles, signalling for the vehicles to stop or drive on. Blink, created by researchers at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, turns the awkward dance of eye contact and hand gestures that happens when a car slows down while someone is waiting to cross the road into something driverless cars could understand. The Blink design integrates an organic light-emitting diode display into the windscreen and rear window of the car and uses light signals to show pedestrians when the car is aware of their presence. If the car's sensors detect a pedestrian nearby, a figure lights up that mirrors their movements, accompanied by a bleep.
